Jack Melham

Music Designer

Jack graduated from RWCMD with a First Class BMus in Creative Music Technology (Composition) in 2011.

Music designer Jack joined Creative Assembly, a multi-million selling European games developer, after graduating. He is now Lead Music Designer, winning awards from BAFTAs to Audio Innovation of the Year, from Music Design and Game Developers Choice Awards to Best Sound Design at Music and Sound Awards, along the way.

He’s now in charge of all the in-game music across Creative Assembly’s Total War franchise, and comes back to the College to talk to students and pass on his experiences.

Making the most of your time at RWCMD

Jack joined the College knowing he wanted to work with music and tech, and worked with music and video games during his training to practise those skills and prepare him for the gaming industry he wanted to enter.

He also chose to focus on traditional classical composition, which included learning score prep, working on live recordings and writing for orchestra – which he still feels was one of his biggest achievements while at College – all skills he still uses today.

‘The size of the classes meant that there was always someone available to have face to face time with for help or for feedback, and you could always use the College’s hardware and software. The recording suite is a brilliant, state-of-the-art facility, and it was amazing that there was always someone there to assist (and were always happy to!)

I loved the friendliness and the welcome of the College. Cardiff felt like a second home.

My advice to students is, while you’re at the College, spend all the time you can writing music and taking the chance to be brave in a safe space.

Make the most of this time, and make the most of your fellow musicians, as you’ll never be in another situation where someone will play your music for a favour in return!’
