Blaise Malaba
Opera singer
Blaise graduated from RWCMD in 2018 with an MA in Opera Performance.
MA Opera Performance graduate Blaise has been working since he graduated in 2018, becoming an Opera Holland Park Young Artist and then a Jette Parker Young Artist at Royal Opera House until 2022.
Named as a rising star in BBC Music Magazine in 2020, opera singing wasn't Blaise's first choice of career. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, he was studying International Relations in Ukraine when he took up vocal training in 2012, and went on become a finalist in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2015, when he first came to RWCMD.
Recent highlights include his critically acclaimed debut as Zuniga in Royal Opera House’s ‘Carmen’, his debut as Colline in ‘La Boheme’ with Canadian Opera Company, and as Abimélech in ‘Samson et Dalila’ at Royal Opera House under Sir Antonio Pappano.

‘I firmly believe that talent without education is not worth a lot. Whatever I’m doing now, 95% of it I learned at the Royal Welsh College. I’d never really studied music before arriving here at RWCMD.
I was singing in choirs but I hadn’t ever had any formal training and so I was very curious and open to learn from everyone I could. I learned everything here, from the language lessons, movement, drama classes, singing lessons... and within two years, I had all the tools I needed to be ready for the industry. 'Blaise Malaba
