National Talent Pathway
The National Talent Pathway (NTP) is an emerging approach focused on supporting young people in Wales to explore their potential in music.
At its heart, NTP is about building confidence and helping young people see that a future in music could be possible.
Partnership at its core
The National Talent Pathway (NTP) is designed to complement, not replace, existing provision.
Working with schools, music services and sector partners, it brings together expertise and resources to create a more connected pathway for young people. RWCMD acts as a national convener, strengthening links between local activity and wider opportunities.
The approach
The pathway is aimed at young people from upper primary age, identified through teachers and music services.
Activity may include:
- mentoring and guidance from specialist tutors
- informal performance and feedback opportunities
- peer and side-by-side experiences with students and ensembles
The focus is on regular support over time, rather than one-to-one tuition, helping each young person develop at their own pace based on their ability and circumstances.
Access and impact
NTP is particularly focused on young people in state education who show potential but may lack access to opportunities.
Through collaboration with partners, including organisations such as Future Talent and National Open Youth Orchestra, the pathway aims to:
- widen access to high-quality musical experiences
- support progression into further study and training
- strengthen talent development across Wales
