Inspiring the next generation: RWCMD Youth Instrument days, bringing young musicians together

Working in partnership to reach more young people
This Spring term we’ve welcomed young musicians from across Wales and the UK, coming together at the College for our first five free Youth Instrument Days, creating music and learning alongside our students, tutors and visiting artists.
Working with other Welsh music providers these first Instrument Days have focused on Guitar, Woodwind, French Horn, Harp and Percussion: young students have worked, interacted and performed with leading musicians including Zoran Dukić, Lumas Winds, Ben Goldscheider, and Joel Von Lerber, before sharing a final performance with family and friends in the Dora Stoutzker Hall.
‘One of the College’s most vital roles in Wales is developing musical talent in young people, extending opportunity, diversity and access.
These free, regular engagement events offer opportunities to experience live music and performance, signposting pathways for further development, and nurturing creative ambition.’Kevin PriceDirector, Open RWCMD
Next steps: Bringing a career in the arts to life
The Instrument Days support young musicians as they build their musical development, confidence and motivation through a variety of workshops, ensemble playing, and performance with both the leading international artists and College tutors and students.
This immersive experience gives early learners a first taste of the collaborative experience of music, and offers more advanced learners a glimpse of conservatoire level learning, mentorship and tuition. They all share the value of being part of a musical family, for example, the French Horn, known as 'a rare breed instrument', was out in force with visiting artists Ben Goldscheider bringing over 50 players together to play on the Dora Stoutzker stage.
Working and connecting with our students, who might be only a few years ahead of them, shows young people the next potential and relatable steps in their music journey.
This parent’s feedback really put into words how the experience can benefit a young musician:
‘We had high expectations because my other son has just taken part in your Brass engagement day with the Cory Band. But nothing prepared us for the level of pride and happiness that our son came home with!
Your tutors are awe-inspiring. For a young learner to spend any amount of time in their company is a real privilege.Their passion for their instruments and energy to enthuse the next generation of players was so easily apparent.
But what really stood out for him was how lovely your students are -not only are they wonderful musicians but highly inspirational role models too.
As a result of these two amazing days for young players we now have a 13yr old and an 11yr old desperate to come and be a student at the RWCMD themselves one day.’Parent of young musicians who attended the Youth Instrument Days
The Youth Instrument Days build on the success of our three-day jazz workshops, which launched the College’s National Youth Jazz Wales partnership with National Youth Arts Wales and Jazz Explorers Cymru last year.
Bringing young artists together from around Wales, it inspired young artist Lucas Tyldesley to come to the Royal Welsh College, where he’s now studying Jazz piano. He’ll be joined next year by two more young musicians who applied to the College as a result of these inspirational sessions.

RWCMD Music students: Learning to be musicians in society
As well as developing as an individual musician, recognising the importance of using their own skills to make a difference within their community, is an integral part of RWCMD music students’ training.
Taking part in the Instrument Days offers them a focused experience in an educational setting, enabling them to give mentorship, advice and inspiration, and to be role models to younger musicians.
‘I just wanted to say another huge well done on a super successful day! It was such a joy to see all the kids, especially those from the Penarth group, with smiles on their faces when learning & playing Dragon Boy.
Thank you for being awesome & giving them this day of inspiration! Thank you also for all the support you have given me to allow me to feel more confident in these situations.
The concert was just amazing, & the masterclass was really meaningful for me.’Beth CooperUndergraduate Guitar student
Teachers and educators: strengthening and supporting partnerships
Music teachers and educators joined the visiting artists, RWCMD tutors and students to share approaches to nurturing young talent, and form deeper, long-term partnerships with the College and its community.
‘For all of the adults involved in these sharing days, we have really valued the friendship we’ve built and the connections we have made with each other.
The College can really help by offering the time and space for us to have these conversations, to look at how we can support each other, and how this enriches our students’ experience. It feels like we’re building a community, which is the very best outcome.’Helen SandersonHead of Guitar Performance
Looking forward: reaching across Wales
As Wales’ national conservatoire, the College is planning future events around the country, in partnership with Music Service Wales and National Youth Arts Wales, building on ongoing work to bring enjoyment, opportunity and expertise, and to share our long-term commitment to Welsh music.
Free Jazz and Folk Discovery Days, led by expert tutors, again bringing together musicians across Wales, took place in March in a programme delivered by National Youth Arts Wales, in partnership with the College and National Music Service Wales.
