Looking after your mental health and wellbeing

Recognising when you need support
We know that mental health difficulties can sometimes be more common within creative communities. Striving for excellence is part of being a performer, artist or technician, but when those high standards aren’t met, it can take a toll on how we feel. That’s why it’s so important to recognise when you need support and to reach out early.
Our Student Support Manager, Kate Williams, has shared some useful ways to access help, whether you’re looking for someone to talk to or want to explore resources on your own.
Support at RWCMD
- Counselling is available to all students at RWCMD. For more information, or to self-refer, visit the HUB.
- You can also email StudentServices@rwcmd.ac.uk to arrange a wellbeing meeting or to find out what other support is available.
- Did you know that as a student or member of staff you’re eligible for a free Headspace app subscription? It’s a great tool to explore mindfulness and build small moments of calm into your day.
- You’ll also find details of other support options signposted on the Student Services office door.
External resources you can access
- You can explore free courses on mental health and wellbeing for everyone through the Cardiff and Vale Recovery & Wellbeing College.
- The NHS 111 Wales – Health A-Z: Mental Health and Wellbeing pages are also a great source of trusted advice and self-help tools.
- If you need emergency or out-of-hours support, you’ll find more information on the RWCMD HUB.
Remember, looking after your mental health isn’t just about asking for help when things get tough. It’s about taking small, regular steps to protect your wellbeing from talking to friends and tutors to finding time to rest and reset.
If you need to talk, we’re here to listen.
