National Music Service Wales

We are proud to work in partnership with the National Music Service Wales to help more young people across Wales discover, develop and share their musical talent.

Together, we are connecting local music opportunities with world-class training, helping young musicians build confidence, develop their skills and see clear pathways for the future.

Supporting music for young people across Wales

The National Music Service Wales works with local music services and schools to provide music education and opportunities for young people across the country.

The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama has been a partner in shaping the current Music Service model, and continued Welsh Government support has enabled that to grow. We aim to build on what already exists and together strengthen the opportunities for young musicians at every stage, from first experiences of making music through to advanced training.

What we do together

Our partnership supports a range of opportunities designed to inspire and develop young musicians.

Discovery Days and workshops
Young musicians can explore new instruments, musical styles and performance opportunities through practical, hands-on sessions with RWCMD staff, students and visiting artists.

Access to professional environments
Events hosted at RWCMD give young people the chance to rehearse and perform in professional spaces and meet working musicians.

Developing talent pathways
We work together to help talented young musicians understand the next steps in their musical journey, whether that is joining ensembles, continuing training or exploring careers in music.

Supporting teachers and music leaders
The partnership also connects RWCMD’s expertise with music educators across Wales, helping to share knowledge and strengthen music education networks.

Part of a wider network

This partnership is part of a wider network of organisations working together to support music across Wales. RWCMD collaborates with partners including National Youth Arts Wales and leading professional ensembles such as BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Welsh National Opera.

By connecting schools, music services, youth organisations and professional artists, we are helping to create stronger musical pathways across Wales.

As part of the College’s Open RWCMD initiative, the partnership with the National Music Service Wales will continue to grow. Together we are exploring new ways to bring music opportunities closer to communities across the country and support the next generation of musicians in Wales.

About the National Music Service Wales

The National Music Service Wales is a Welsh Government backed initiative that aims to ensure all children and young people across Wales have access to high quality music education and opportunities to take part in music, regardless of their background or financial situation.

It implements the National Plan for Music Education by working with local authority music services, schools, and community organisations to provide a music education programme comprising of playing instruments, singing, composing, ensemble performance and creative music making for learners aged roughly 3 to 16.

The service also supports teachers with resources and training (including the Charanga Cymru digital platform) and maintains a national library of instruments and equipment to widen access and participation across schools and communities throughout Wales.
