The Concert Orchestra focusses on popular, lighter repertoire and a repertoire orchestra offers opportunities for students to encounter a range of standard works.

RWCMD has well established relationships with two of the UK’s most prolific professional orchestras – the orchestra of Welsh National Opera (WNO) and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) – both of which offer a range of opportunities for the College’s student musicians to gain practical insights into the demands of playing in a professional orchestra.

Undergraduate students of brass, percussion, string and woodwind instruments can audition for a placement through a process that replicates a real-life audition for a trial or post. Successful students will have the opportunity to sit alongside the professional musicians in rehearsals for major performances.

The orchestra of Welsh National Opera also holds regular residencies at the College, which include opportunities for a larger number of student players to perform in special ‘side by side’ concerts.
