Individual Lessons and Accompaniment

Most music students receive weekly one-to-one lessons. Tutors include leading recitalists, chamber and jazz musicians, orchestral players, opera singers, composers, and specialists in distinct areas of professional development. Among the regular tutors are many members of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Welsh National Opera, and the 200+ visiting staff includes a growing number of internationally renowned musicians drawn from across the UK.

The training at RWCMD also includes a significant allocation of time for instrumentalists and singers to work individually with professional accompanists in addition to their one-to-one lessons. This allows them the opportunity to explore repertoire in an informed way, and to develop a fully integrated, collaborative context for their performances. Each student works closely with one of the College’s accompanists over a number of years, enabling them to develop the sort of artistic partnership that is typical in the professional world.

Reflecting a strong emphasis on collaborative music-making, the College also provides regular coaching as well as mentoring with specialists in ensemble performance.
