Biography

Steve began his career while studying at Trinity College of Music, and since then has worked regularly on the British and International jazz scene.

Expertise

He has recorded seven critically acclaimed CDs under his own name featuring many original compositions and arrangements, including Buddy Bolden Blew It, Our Delight, October Arrival, Stablemates, Out of Touch and Destination Unknown. Steve has also co-written with John O’Neil, a highly acclaimed Jazz Trumpet tutor book, The Jazz Method for Trumpet published by Schott & Co.

In February 2019 Steve had the first performance of his Concerto for Jazz Trumpet and Orchestra with the Surrey Mozart Players at the Electric Theatre in Guildford.

In April 2022 Steve recorded the Daryl Runswick Concerto For Trumpet with the BBC Now Orchestra.

He is also professor of Jazz Trumpet at Trinity College of Music in London, visiting Jazz Trumpet specialist at the Royal Northern College of Music, the Royal Welsh College of Music and the Purcell School. Steve also teaches on many summer jazz courses and has conducted numerous trumpet master classes and workshops ranging in size from small groups to big bands throughout the UK, Spain, Finland, Latvia, Germany, Peru, U.S.A, Russia, South Africa and Cuba.

Notable Achievements

In 2004 Steve was awarded an honoury ARAM from the Royal Academy of Music.

During lockdown, Steve collaborated with musician/producer Paul Hazel on a project re-imagining music by composer Sun Ra.
