Jazz Promotion Network: Showcase II

Join us across two nights, as part of the Jazz Promotion Network Conference, to celebrate the very best jazz artists from across the UK and Ireland. These showcase evenings will play host to a brilliant line-up of artists including Welsh musicians Huw Warren and Angharad Jenkins, who’ll present their new duo project ‘The Gower Nightingale / Eos Gwyr’ which explores musical traditions, identity and language with a focus on the Gower and Swansea where both musicians grew up. More artists to be announced soon. Supported by Arts Council Wales and co-hosted by RWCMD & Cardiff University Music Department.

Sir Bryn Terfel Song Prize

Some of the most promising undergraduate singers from UK conservatoires will compete for the accolade of becoming the first winner of the Sir Bryn Terfel Song Prize. One of the world’s most esteemed opera singers and RWCMD’s Vice President, Sir Bryn is passionate about his cultural heritage and the artistry of song. This competition aims to celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity with each competitor performing from the great canon of artsong, songs from their own heritage and a song in Welsh. Bryn will chair the international panel of expert judges from the world of vocal music and opera.

Claire Booth & Ensemble 360: Berio Folk Songs

Ensemble 360 and Claire Booth, who have forged a dynamic partnership through their performances of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire together, now turn their attention to Berio's quirky and intriguing Folk Songs in the composer's centenary year. Indeed, folk influences pervade the whole programme, from Rebecca Clarke's pastoral-tinged duo for clarinet and viola and Katherine Hoover’s evocation of the Hopi people to Ravel's sultry, sun-drenched pictures of Madagascar.

Little Angel Theatre: The Paper Dolls

When a little girl cuts out a string of paper dolls she takes them by the hand and together they go on a fantastical adventure whirling through their home and garden. Ticky, Tacky, Jackie the Backie, Jim with two noses and Jo with the bow fly through time and tear across worlds of fun and excitement. They face the Jurassic clutches of a toy dinosaur and the snapping jaws of the oven glove crocodile, and then a very real boy with very real scissors threatens to snip their adventure short… A Little Angel Theatre and Polka Theatre co-production, based on the original book by Julia Donaldson and Rebecca Cobb
