Biography

Welsh tenor Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts read Music at Lancaster University before studying at the RNCM with Barbara Robotham.
Jeff’s portrayal of Peter Grimes in Phyllida Lloyd’s Opera North production saw the company win the Royal Philharmonic Society Award, the South Bank Award and the TMA Award.

Jeff has a strong association with contemporary music, particularly the work of Harrison Birtwistle. His performances include Punch and Judy in Amsterdam, multiple roles in The Last Supper (Glyndebourne, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Scotland and Milan), and King Arthur in Gawain at the Salzburg Festival and the Barbican. Birtwistle wrote the cantata Angel Fighter for Jeff, which received its world premiere at Thomaskirche, Leipzig in 2010, followed by the British premiere at the BBC Proms in 2011.

Expertise

Recognised as one of the UK’s leading singing actors, Jeff’s wide-ranging repertoire has seen him perform with major opera houses and orchestras across the world.

A firm believer in physical freedom and the use of the whole body and mind to create an energised sound, Jeff’s holistic teaching approach places emphasis on primal sound in combination with the Italian chiaroscuro / bel canto technique. This fusion supports vocal freedom and stamina, enabling singers to make music with intention and connect deeply with the text.

Jeff was at the forefront of the development of education departments at English Touring Opera, ENO, Glyndebourne, WNO, Opera North and ROH in the early 1990s. He has given masterclasses at RNCM and Trinity Laban and has coached young singers at Opera North and Glyndebourne.

He was a visiting vocal professor at the University of Southampton and now teaches at Cardiff University’s School of Music and at RWCMD.

Jeff is also a vocal coach for the National Youth Choir of Wales and The Glyndebourne Academy.

As a broadcaster and presenter, Jeff has worked for BBC Radio 3, the World Service and Proms Extra, and is a regular pundit and reporter for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.
