Ashley John Long is a composer, double bassist and lecturer. His music has been performed by numerous soloists and ensembles including BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Philharmonic Orchestra, UPROAR, Chromatophonic Trio, Trio Anima and Sond’Ar-te. As a double bassist he performs internationally specialising in contemporary music, improvisation and jazz working with a diverse range of ensembles as well as performing solo recitals. He is also active as an educator and is a lecturer in musicology, composition and performance at Cardiff University School of Music. His research interests include contemporary performance practice and contemporary composition.

His flute concerto '…and then was gone' was recently recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with Matthew Featherstone as soloist. His chamber work 'Beyond the Haze of Winter’s Edge' was selected to represent Wales at ISCM’s World Music Days in 2025. He is the recipient of awards for composition and performance, and his work in both fields is featured on over 70 albums and available on labels including Ubuntu, Signum Classics, FMR, Discus and Confront.
He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
