Biography

Steven Devine enjoys a busy musical life as a keyboard player and conductor, working with some of the finest musicians.

Expertise

He is Principal Keyboard for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and is also the Director of their very popular Cantata series “Bach, the Universe and Everything”. In addition, he has conducted the orchestra across Europe and Asia. Steven is Music Director for New Chamber Opera in Oxford and with them has performed repertoire from Cavalli to Rossini. For the Dartington Festival Opera he has conducted Handel’s Orlando and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. He is currently conductor and Artistic Advisor for the English Haydn Festival in Bridgnorth.

Specialising on harpsichord and early piano Steven plays all over the world as soloist and continuo player. He was for many years the keyboard player with London Baroque and toured the world with them. Steven released a CD recording of Book 1 of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (“it’s the one of all I’ve heard in the past ten years that I am happiest to live with.” Early Music Review) with Book 2 released in 2020. His discography includes repertoire from Medieval Music to new compositions (a number of composers have created works for him).

Steven works regularly with the Norwegian Wind Ensemble, Trondheim Barokk, the Victoria Baroque Players (BC, Canada) and Arion Baroque Ensemble (Montreal).

He is Early Keyboard Consultant to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
