Biography

Sergey Levitin is an internationally acclaimed violinist and concertmaster, known for his artistry and leadership. At just 23, he was appointed Concertmaster of the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra by Valery Gergiev, touring globally and contributing to major recordings with Philips Classics and Decca. He has performed as a soloist under conductors like Valery Gergiev and Gianandrea Noseda at prestigious festivals such as the Edinburgh Festival and White Nights Festival.

As a prize winner at international competitions, including the Lipizer and Paganini violin competitions, he also received the Renato de Barbieri Prize for his interpretation of Paganini’s capriccios. Since 2004, he has led the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as concertmaster. He is the founder of the Chamber Principals of London, an ensemble that debuted to acclaim at Teatro Verdi di Salerno. His extensive collaborations include performances with Sir Antonio Pappano, Alison Balsom, and Alexei Volodin, as well as recording world premieres with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra.

Expertise

Levitin’s expertise spans solo, chamber, and orchestral performance. A dedicated chamber musician, he co-founded the Hermitage String Trio and has made multiple appearances at Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, and the Royal Opera House. He is a sought-after guest concertmaster for leading orchestras, including the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

As an educator, he has led violin and orchestral workshops at institutions like the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Recently, he has served as “Commissario esterno” at Teatro Regio and will expand this role to the Teatro di San Carlo in 2025, further cementing his influence in the classical music world.
