Biography

Sarah Bennington currently holds the position of Sub-Principal Flute with the Welsh National Opera – a job that requires her to also play Principal Flute, Piccolo and Alto Flute as required. Before this she held the positions of Principal 2nd Flute with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, and Principal Flute with Orquestra do Norte, in Portugal. She also works with other UK orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Expertise

Sarah enjoys a variety of chamber music, which includes working as guest Principal with the Berkeley Ensemble, with whom she has been Artist In Residence at the Dartington International Summer School. She also features on their album “Lennox Berkeley: Chamber Works.”

As soloist, Sarah enjoys doing recitals and has performed numerous concertos including the Nielsen Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, the Mozart Concerto in G, and CPE Bach’s Concerto in D minor, as well as the Liebermann Piccolo Concerto.

Sarah is also an actor. When not making music, she is busy filming or working on a play. She received the award for Best Individual Performance in the Glamorgan Drama League One Act Play Festival, for her performance in “The Last Nickel” with Monocle Theatre Company.

Notable Achievements

Sarah is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied with Ian Clarke, Philippa Davies and Sharon Williams. She was awarded the Dove Prize for graduating with the highest mark in her year level, and the Laurie Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Flute Prize for her final recital.
