RWCMD Big Band: Celebrating Billie Holiday & Sarah Vaughan

Taking centre stage, RWCMD Big Band perform hits from two of the most inspirational American jazz voices of the 20th century – Billie ‘Lady Day’ Holiday and the Queen of Bebop, Sarah Vaughan. With their soulful, emotive styles of singing, these two icons led the way. Holiday with her unique vocal phrasing that created an offbeat swing style, and Vaughan with her incredible scat improvisation and extensive vocal range. 

The concert starts with a nod to the legends of the Village Vanguard, trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis, who captivated the jazz world with a fresh swinging sound and an entirely new approach to the big band genre.
