Biography

Paul Jones is a pianist, arranger, composer and musician from Penclawdd, Gower.

Expertise

He currently records and performs (with Stephen Black) as the ambient clarinet and piano duo Group Listening. Their debut album Clarinet & Piano: Selected Works Vol.1 was released on PRAH Recordings, and has led subsequently to extensive touring and festival appearances. The duo recently collaborated with Cate Le Bon, re-imagining pieces from her Mercury Prize nominated album Reward to create the E.P Here It Comes Again (Mexican Summer/Rough Trade). They also remixed tracks for American alt-indie artist Lambchop, as featured on the Basement Tapes E.P (City Slang Records).

He has performed with a wide range of Jazz artists including: Scott Hamilton, Keith Tippett, Pete King, Jason Yarde and Wycliffe Gordon. He formed and co-led the welsh jazz quartet The Jones O’Connor Group, receiving critical acclaim for their two albums, and was composer in residence for the Brecon Jazz Festival.

More recently he’s been touring and recording with artists such as H. Hawkline, Charles Watson/Slow Club and Sweet Baboo.

Previously he’s collaborated with Linder Sterling, Zervas & Pepper, Amampondo and Goldie Lookin’ Chain, on their U.K #5 album, Greatest Hits.

Composing commissions include: Sonic Arts Network (Sound & Music Expo), Wales Jazz Composers Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, Leeds Lieder festival, and Cardiff New Music Ensemble (Bliss Trust bursary).

Notable Achievements

Recent performance highlights include Le Guess Who Festival? (Utrecht, Netherlands), The Altitude Jazz Festival (Briançon, French Alps), and Sonic City Festival (Kortrijk, Belgium).

His writing, arranging and performances have been featured on BBC Radio Three, Four, BBC 6Music and others. His music has also been broadcast on Netflix (Easy, season three) and S4C.
