Student Experience

“When I walked through the doors, I knew instantly that this was where I wanted to be.”

Halls of residence at Severn Point

Most students live in halls of residence in their first year, and many choose shared houses later on. The Halls are at Severn Point – a fully managed and secure site, which is a short walk from the College. Every student is guaranteed an en-suite study bedroom in a shared flat at the halls of residence throughout their course. Standard contracts are for 42 weeks from September to July so there’s no need to move your stuff out during the Christmas or Easter vacations and you can even choose to stay year round if you can’t bear to leave Cardiff. The rent is just £116.25 per week, including bills. That’s at least 25% cheaper than in London and other UK cities and could save you up to £3000 a year.

Finding Friends

Students in Bute Park

Every summer, RWCMD’s Students’ Union runs a hugely successful scheme to help new students find suitable flatmates. Based on your own preferences, you’ll get contact details for four or five other new students so that you can get in touch or meet up before the start of term.

Student Services

The College employs two full-time staff members – Brian Weir and Jo Westall – who work closely with the College’s management team and the Students’ Union to ensure that all students can access a full range of support services to help them get the most out of their time at RWCMD. They provide a first point of contact for students with a range of issues, and offer day-to-day practical support from finding suitable accommodation and potential housemates to advice on managing finances, accessing funding, and finding suitable part-time work. They also co-ordinate a range of specialist services to support the physical, mental and spiritual health of students at RWCMD. These include a disability and dyslexia service, a free confidential counselling service, a College Chaplaincy, a sports massage service and a Healthy Artist scheme that provides access to specialist performance-related health support.

Disability and Dyslexia Service

The College offers confidential and professional advice to support students with health conditions or learning difficulties including dyslexia, epilepsy, depression, ME, diabetes and autistic spectrum disorders. It can co-ordinate a range of practical support to ensure that you are able to commence your studies at RWCMD, progress through your course, and graduate successfully. The College has a dedicated Mental Well-Being Advisor, and provides free access to a confidential counselling service. Its Disability Advisor can provide assistance to students in applying for Disabled Students Allowance, arranging needs assessments, and developing Individual Support Plans, which may include additional specialist tutorial support for students with specific learning difficulties.

Michael Sheen in RWCMD Library

The library’s collections hold more than 50,000 items including books, journals, newspapers, play scripts, scores, orchestral sets and audio visual material. In 2014, it also became the home of the UK’s largest lending collection of play sets. The library also provides access to online resources including databases of thousands of audio and video recordings of classical and jazz music, and leading contemporary theatre productions.

Enterprise and Employability

The College’s training programmes are designed as far as possible to replicate the conditions that you can expect to meet in the industry after graduation. Through your studies at RWCMD, you will be exposed to professional contacts and career guidance. Performance opportunities are embedded into the training programmes and, in addition to this, there are opportunities to gain valuable practical experience through RepCo – a company run by RWCMD students, and partly funded by Arts Council Wales. To support your transition into the professional world, the College also offers a programme of talks and seminars on career management, from accountancy to managing your personal brand.
