Two Year Programme
(An intensive one year mode is available in certain cases)

The Master of Music programme is usually offered as a two-year programme although in some circumstances it may be possible to complete the programme in one intensive year. If you apply for the one-year programme and we decide that you are not eligible, we will automatically consider your application for the two-year programme.

Your Principal Study activities will include up to 60 hours of one-to-one lessons. Instrumentalists and vocalists will attend classes in performance practice and the analysis of scores for performance. You will also undertake a substantial research project, which is supported by one-to-one tutorials. These studies will inform the development of a one-hour final recital, which is the culmination of the course.

If you specialise in composition or creative music technology, specialist classes include advanced harmony and counterpoint, analysis and aesthetics, sound and image, recording techniques and advanced instrumentation. These studies will support the development of a portfolio of compositions for assessment.

A series of postgraduate seminars, aimed at those with an interest in Performance Research, enables students to present papers on their current research as well as providing a forum for wide-ranging discussion. External speakers such as Dr Robert Philip, Professor Jim Samson and Dr Roy Howat make regular contributions to these seminars.
