Audition Guidance

Audition Dates

Once we have received your application we will write to you to let you know the exact date and time of your audition. For applications received before 1st October 2010, auditions will be held for two consecutive weeks in November 2010.

For applications received after the deadline of 1st October 2010, auditions will be held during February 2011. Auditions will only be held if vacancies still exist.

At Your Audition

There will be three members of the audition panel and the audition will last between 15-30 minutes in total.

You will have access to an individual practice room in which to warm up for 25-30 minutes before your audition starts.

If you wish, we can provide an accompanist at your audition and during your warm-up.

In advance of your audition you will be required to submit a 30-minute recital programme, noting which one piece you would like to start with in the audition. At least one of your audition pieces should contain a substantial element of improvisation. The panel will then select a further piece from the list and advise you which one they have selected before you begin your warm-up. You should take care to select pieces which will allow you to demonstrate the full extent of your ability in a range of styles. The panel will also take the opportunity in the audition to work with you on selected sections from the works you have performed.

Following your audition, you may be asked to attend an academic interview. As part of your interview, you will discuss a piece of written work which we will ask you to complete in advance and submit to us one week before your audition. The piece of written work takes the form of an analytical programme note of approximately 1,000 words on a piece of core repertoire for your principal study area, discussing both the music and its context.

Also, during your interview we will also ask you about your particular interests, practical experiences and career aspirations. You will also have the opportunity to ask specific questions related to the programme.

Further Guidance

When we receive your application, we will send you further information and guidance to help you prepare for your audition.
