Young Actors Studio
Summer School 2012
Monday 23rd July – Friday 17th August 2012
The Young Actors Studio 2012 Summer School will run across four
weeks from Monday 23rd July – Friday 17th August 2012. A series of
Acting Workshops for ages 16-18 will run on Mondays to Thursdays
from 10am to 4pm from 23rd July - 2nd August, and a one-day Acting
Technique Masterclass will run on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th
August. Our two-week devising workshop, Let's Make a Play, for 15 -
20 year olds will run from Monday 6th - Friday 17th August. All
classes take place at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama
where students will benefit from specialist training from
experienced, professional theatre practitioners. There will be a
maximum of twelve students in each workshop and masterclass and a
maximum of sixteen in Let's Make a Play, allowing all participants
to receive a high level of individual attention.
ACTING WORKSHOPS
The Acting Workshops for 16 - 18 year olds provide a taste of
the training available through the college’s Young Actors Studio,
which runs on Sundays throughout the year. Each workshop will focus
on one of the core skills which form part of the professional actor
training delivered by top drama schools.

Exploring the use of the body as a tool for expression and physical
communication

Exploring what makes for effective use of the voice in

The Actor and the Play
Exploring the process by which the actor creates a believable
character from the words and ideas contained in a contemporary play

Getting to Grips with Shakespeare
Exploring how to interpret and speak Shakespeare’s verse with
greater ease and confidence.

AUDITION TECHNIQUE MASTERCLASS
This one-day
masterclass is an opportunity for you to work on your audition
speeches and receive feedback from RWCMD Senior Acting Lecturer
Jamie Garven. You will explore what is involved in acting at
audition and how to avoid the pitfalls. In particular you will
learn how to overcome nerves and how to remain flexible and
spontaneous.

year’s SUMMER SCHOOLS, YAS will be running a new 2 week workshop
for 15 to 20 year olds
LET’S MAKE A PLAY
A two week devising
workshop culminating in a performance for an invited
audience.

About Paul Clements ...
After training and working as a teacher of English and Drama in
Birmingham, Paul Clements joined the staff of the newly-opened
Midlands Arts Centre in the city to run the youth theatre division.
He later moved to Manchester and became the founding artistic
director of Contact Theatre. He has subsequently taught, acted and
directed in Canada, Scandinavia and in the UK.
Paul was Director of Drama at the Royal Welsh College of Music
and Drama, 1985-1996, and Principal of Mountview Academy of Theatre
Arts from 1996 until he retired in 2008. He was also artistic
director of the National Youth Theatre of Wales for five years
before going to Mountview. His book The Improvised Play
was the first full-length study of the work of Mike Leigh.
This year Paul and Sabine Berendse’s book,
Ask Me More About Brecht (the first English translation of
conversations between her father and the German composer and close
personal friend of Bertolt Brecht, Hanns Eisler), will be published
and they will soon be touring the USA with dramatised extracts from
the book and in the Autumn will be taking the performance to Berlin
and Liepzig.
Paul continues to teach on a part-time basis including for the
RWCMD Drama Department and YAS.

Means-tested bursaries of up to 100% are normally available to
