Young Actors Studio
Auditioning for Acting Courses
During 2010/11, YAS will run two one year Acting
Courses.
ACT I (recommended age range 16 to 18)
provides talented young actors, who are considering training for a
career in theatre, with an introduction to professional actor
training and an opportunity to develop confidence and
creativity, essential acting skills and audition technique.
ACT II (recommended age range 17 to 19)
provides talented young actors, who have decided to
audition for drama school, with a taste of professional actor
training and an opportunity to prepare intensively for the audition
process.

If you are applying for ACT I your audition
will take the form of a workshop. A physical warm-up session with
one of our Movement Tutors will be followed by games and drama
exercises to put you at ease and a short improvisation session. The
tutors leading this part of the workshop audition and those on the
panel observing will be looking for motivation, ability to work
with others and potential. You will not be required to prepare or
perform any speeches.
If you are applying for the ACT II you will be
asked to present two contrasting speeches to the audition panel and
to the other members of your audition group following a physical
warm-up session with one of our Movement Tutors. The panel will be
looking for flair, accuracy and potential as well as how
convincingly you inhabit the part. When choosing your audition
speeches and preparing for your audition we recommend that you:
- avoid over-used speeches. This is because your audition panel
will have seen the piece performed many times before, which may
make it harder for you to stand out
- avoid speeches by characters much older than yourself, unless
the emotions within it are universal
- avoid telephone speeches
- avoid using props unless absolutely essential
- make sure you are secure in remembering the pieces you
select
Throughout your time with us the panel will seek to put you at
ease and to make the experience an enjoyable and constructive one.
Although it will not be possible for parents/carers/friends to
accompany you in the audition room itself, they are welcome to wait
for you in the Coffee Bar or main reception.
You will receive notification of the result of your audition by
post. Your audition score sheet will be made available to you on
request.
