Michael Lowe - Baritone

Michael is from Chepstow in South Wales. A baritone, Michael is in his final year at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff where he is currently training on the MA Musical Theatre course. In November 2016, Michael was invited to perform for HRH The Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace for a second time, where he sang alongside the band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. Performances at the college this year include Christmas on Broadway, Moira Buffini’s Dying For It, the Ahrens and Flaherty revue Larger Than Life and a gala performance celebrating the career of Dame Shirley Bassey and attended by Dame Shirley herself. In 2015, Michael was awarded the college’s Ian Stoutzker Prize for outstanding musicianship.

Michael was a choral scholar with the BBC National Chorus of Wales in 2013-14 and performed with them at the first night of the 2014 BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. A finalist in both the Kathleen Ferrier Society Bursary for Young Singers competition and the Dunvant Welsh Musical Theatre Young Singer of the Year competition, his classical performance credits include the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama’s productions of Mr Punch and Me in the Richard Burton Theatre, The Magic Flute at Sherman Cymru, the role of Sam (his operatic debut with the Welsh National Youth Opera), in WNYO’s production of The Sleeper, a role he later reprised at the 2011 Tête à Tête Opera Festival in London; and in Richard Barnard and Alan Harris’s new opera The Hidden Valley at Tête à Tête 2013.

Whilst at Welsh National Youth Opera, Michael performed in a Musical Theatre masterclass given by Mary King. His Musical Theatre credits include: Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Enrico Castelli in Copacabana, Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Javert in Les Misérables, and the world premiere recording of My Land’s Shore.

Future plans include further productions at RWCMD and continued development of his career as a composer which has resulted in song cycle The Heart of Man, musical Columbine and the music for the play Dying For It.
