Three members of RWCMD's Young Actors
Studio are appearing in The Indian Doctor, a new
daytime drama for BBC One starring Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ayesha Dharker
and Mark Williams.
YAS student, Naomi Everson, RWCMD 2009 BA Acting Graduate and
2008/09 YAS Student Mentor, Alexander Vlahos and YAS Leader, Erica
Eirian are currently filming the new five-part drama series.
Set in a
small, Welsh mining village in 1963, the plot revolves around Dr
Prem Sharma (Sanjeev Bhaskar), a high-flying Delhi graduate, one of
the thousands of doctors who moved from the Indian subcontinent to
the UK to begin new lives, encouraged by former minister of health,
Enoch Powell. The doctor’s arrival changes the lives of the South
Wales mining community forever.
Naomi, who recently finished filming comedy pilot Shelf Stackers for BBC Switch, plays Gina,
Dr Sharma’s receptionist. Alex, who has recently been in
Crash (BBC Wales), Doctors and Pen Talar
(Fiction Factory, written by Siôn Eirian, alumni and Fellow of
Royal Welsh College,) plays Tom, Gina’s love interest.
"I can’t believe how far I’ve come since I
auditioned for YAS in July 2008," says Naomi. "YAS really got the
ball rolling in terms of castings, which led to an agent and then
to Shelf Stackers and now The Indian Doctor. YAS
gave me ample amounts of confidence in performance and an insight
into the profession and prepared me for training and taught me some
invaluable skills which I’m putting to good use in The Indian
Doctor." Naomi starts her BA Acting Course at the College in
Erica, whose TV credits include episodes of Doctor Who
and Coronation Street, plays Sian, Gina’s grandmother and
runs the ‘little bit of everything’ village shop. "It’s brilliant
that my role running YAS still allows me the time to continue with
directing and acting and I was absolutely thrilled to be offered
the role of Sian in The Indian Doctor, which has such good
stories, great dialogue and strong, rounded characters."
The Indian Doctor airs on BBC1 in mid November.
