College Building Site Provides Model of Inspiration
First year Theatre Design students at Royal Welsh College of
Music & Drama have been inspired by the construction site next
to the College for their first Theatre Design Prop Making
project.
The students’ first introduction to large-scale prop building,
the project involved teams of students building three different
constructions representing a specific range of materials.
‘Robot’, based on an original design by Andree Walin, was
inspired by the College’s construction site adjacent to the College
where building firm Willmott Dixon is working on extending the
College’s facilities, due to be completed in early 2011.
‘The brief required the model to be ‘looming’ and
‘intimidating,’ said Design Technician, Rorie Brophy. ‘It had to be
free-standing, moveable and with a complete structural skeleton.
The students had to use timber, steel, polystyrene, some welding,
and stuff out of a skip.’
