First Year Trombonist Wins Prestigious Prize

Stephen Sykes

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama first year music student Stephen Sykes has won first prize in the prestigious Don Lusher solo competition. Held on Sunday 9 May 2010 in Birmingham, the four finalists were selected from recordings submitted by contestants from across the UK and the final was performed live with a jazz rhythm section.

Stephen’s prize of the Don Lusher Trophy and a professional Yamaha Xeno trombone, will be presented by Diana Lusher in London on Monday 24 May, when he will appear as a soloist with the Ted Heath Band.

In February 2009 Stephen became the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year and performed as soloist with both the Brighouse and Rastrick Band and the Black Dyke band. He also performed as the star soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra Radio 2’s ‘Friday Night is Music Night’ in December 2009.
