Director of Drama Takes on New Role
Sean Crowley, Director of Drama at Royal Welsh College of Music
& Drama, has been named as an Associate Director of Torch
Theatre, Milford Haven.
Alongside fellow Associate Director Simon Harris, Sean will
offer advisory, artistic and creative support to the Board of
Management and continue to contribute as a theatre
practitioner.
As well as being Head of Design, and Director of Drama at the
College and a highly distinguished scenographer, Sean has been
principal designer at Torch Theatre for over 16 years, designing 36
productions and winning many awards.
Sean will still design for the company, but will also help the
theatre to develop a programme to encourage young Welsh design
talent.
‘For the past 10 years, Sean has played a pivotal role in
supporting and nurturing young designers through his leadership of
a Centre of Excellence for scenography training at the Royal Welsh
College,’ said Hilary Boulding, the College’s Principal.
‘Sean’s new role will enable him to help create
more opportunities for young emerging designers to move into
professional work, through combining this Associateship with his
own professional practice and his continuing role as the College’s
Director of Drama. It’s an exciting development at an exciting
moment for theatre in Wales and we wish The Torch well.’
New BBC Production Village in Cardiff
This week BBC Wales have also announced plans to build a new
television production centre to house dramas such as Doctor
Who and Casualty.
Sean Crowley, delighted about his new role at the Torch,
commented, ‘The creation of the BBC production village in Cardiff
is a hugely exciting moment for all drama students at Royal Welsh
College.
Doctor Who, Torchwood and Sarah Jane have
already provided graduates with employment and the chance to work
on productions of the highest standard.’ He adds, ‘The expansion of
the production facilities and breadth of new drama being produced
in Cardiff present our students with an unrivalled opportunity
within the UK.
To have such a wealth of opportunity, virtually within walking
distance of the College, will attract the most talented young
actors, designers and technicians to Wales, not just from the rest
of the UK but internationally.’
