at the Design Exhibition, Bute Theatre, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama from 5-11 June, 10am-8pm.

Graduates from the Theatre Design department present an exhibition of designs, models and costumes for theatre, opera and dance

The Theatre Design department at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama prides itself on preparing students to go on to achieve success in the competitive and demanding industry, not only in Theatre but also film and television. Providing training in specialist areas of set and costume design and realisation, the BA (Hons) Theatre Design course gives students a chance to explore their creative potential unhindered by practical limitations – the spectacular results can be seen at this unique exhibition.

Last year students Tom Scutt and Rhys Jarman were among the four winners of the Linbury Biennial Prize, the UK’s foremost award for emerging theatre designers, providing a launch pad for their careers. Tom Scutt also won the Jocelyn Herbert Award and finalist Sophie Mosburger won a Royal Opera House Bursary. Christopher Giles, a Linbury finalist in 2005 has recently designed Hamlet for the Royal Northern Ballet.

Head of Theatre Design Sean Crowley comments, “Over the past ten years students of Royal Welsh College have been privileged to enter, compete and excel as a part of the Linbury Prize. It is a unique competition that is accepted within the industry as a crucial component in fostering the future of theatre design.”

Colin Richmond, a Linbury finalist from 2003, has gone on to establish an extremely successful career as a theatre designer, designing for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the West End theatres among many others. Adam Wiltshire (a Linbury Prize winner in 2003) has designed across the UK in Theatre and Opera and to great acclaim for the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden.
Hayley Grindle (BA Theatre Design 2004) has worked with the RSC and next year will work on His Dark Materials in Bath. Lindsay Young (2004) is Costume Designer on Dr Who with Louise Martin (2004) as her Costume Assistant. Laura Anne Thomas (2004) is Costume Supervisor at the National Theatre.
Other graduates who have focussed on costume have worked at the National Theatre, the West End and on feature films such as Harry Potter.

Production Designer on Dr Who and Torchwood Edward Thomas has commented on the huge number of students and graduates from Royal Welsh College that have passed through Dr Who and Torchwood, with 15 of them being significant members of his team. For example, James North, (2004) is now an Associate Designer on Dr Who.

In September 2008 the College will welcome the first intake of the new MA in Theatre Design
