Christian Lindberg in RWCMD Brass Celebrations

Christian Linburg

In the build up to the opening of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama’s £22.5 million new facilities, Head of Brass, Kevin Price, has created a week-long brass festival. Featuring renowned trombonist and RWCMD International Chair of Trombone, Christian Lindberg, it will showcase the work of the department in the community and within the College, starting on Tuesday 26th April.

The festival builds on the spirit and ambition of the College, bringing together brass players of all ages and abilities and giving them the opportunity to work with outstanding professionals in a world-class venue. A great supporter of the College’s work, Christian suggested that internationally acclaimed euphonium soloist and RWCMD euphonium tutor David Childs perform the UK premiere of his euphonium concerto, to be the culmination of this celebration of brass music.

The week begins with Brass with the Champions, an initiative building on the partnership of Cory Band (RWCMD band in residence) and Dr Robert Childs, offering young brass musicians the chance to work with tutors selected from Cory Band and musicians from the RWCMD brass band. The day will finish with a public performance, attended by Christian Lindberg.

On Wednesday, Christian will be joining the panel of the RWCMD second annual Stainer and Bell award for brass composition, judging the best composition for brass quintet.

The finale is on Thursday 28th April, with a Concert at Hoddinott Hall, featuring the premiere of Ollie and the Steamboat Jetty, Christian’s concerto for chamber orchestra and euphonium, as well as showcasing Christian Lindberg as soloist and conductor in Sibelius’ 3rd symphony. Prior to the concert there will be a solo recital from trombone virtuoso Peter Moore, the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician Competition (2008). Peter will then be joined by visiting trombonists and RWCMD students working with Kevin Price and his colleagues to prepare a pre-concert performance.
