BBC Radio Cymru Gives RWCMD Student Big 'Opportunity'

RWCMD Music Student's Big 'Opportunity' on New BBC Radio Cymru Series

Osian Meilir Jones, Shân Cothi and Rhys Meirion

Royal Welsh College Voice student, Osian Meilir Jones features in the first episode of Cyfle Cothi, (Cothi's Opportunity)a brand new series on BBC Radio Cymru.

The programme follows Osian as he trains under renowned tenor Rhys Meirion, and prepares for the challenge of a big public performance, at a Christmas concert held at Eglwys Dewi Sant Church, Cardiff.

BBC Radio Cymru has travelled the length and breadth of Wales over the last few months searching for new performing talent for the series which starts on Friday December 10 at 1.15pm.

Presenter Shân Cothi will be joined by a team of experts from different performance areas to guide the chosen six through tuition masterclasses and a grand performance.

“It was a fantastic experience to have a master class with Rhys Merion,” says first year BMus Voice student Osian. “The fact that I can receive tips from a local singer like Rhys who has accomplished so much gives me a big push. Without doubt, Cyfle Cothi has helped me develop as a performer. It has given me the confidence, not only as a singer but to be able to speak confidently on radio, which is a very useful skill as a performer.”

“The Christmas concert will be the first time I’ve performed as a soloist with string ensemble accompaniment. I will also be performing as a soloist, on the same stage as Gwyn Hughes Jones and Rebecca Evans.”

Presenter Shân Cothi adds, “The programme has given promising Welsh talent a special opportunity to learn from the experience of soloists who have hit the big time in the performing world today.”
