Department of String Studies
Through one-to-one lessons and individual sessions with a
professional accompanist, you will concentrate on developing a
secure technique and exploring appropriate solo repertoire. You
will also develop professional skills and musical confidence
through participation in orchestral repertoire classes,
departmental performance classes, lunchtime concerts, masterclasses
and workshops. Classes in baroque style and interpretation allow
you to explore early repertoire and performance practice, and you
will be able to apply for tuition on associated period
instruments.
Chamber music will play an integral role in your development as
a musician. In addition to receiving regular coaching from
specialist staff, the Emperor Quartet, our Quartet in Residence
makes frequent visits and there are opportunities to observe their
community and outreach projects. Student groups are encouraged to
participate in competitions and give recitals in venues including
the Wales Millennium Centre. More experienced ensembles are in
demand to play for functions and special events.
Within the BMus course, classes in teaching skills will address
the fundamental issues you will face as a string teacher and help
you learn techniques for effective and purposeful teaching.
The RWCMD’s String Ensemble maintains an active concert and
touring schedule and further valuable performance opportunities
exist with the RWCMD Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the
Department of String Studies, you will have the additional
opportunity to audition for the placement scheme we have developed
with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Orchestra of the
Welsh National Opera. This privileged arrangement enables selected
students to work with international conductors in two of the UK’s
leading professional orchestras.
