Department of Harp Studies
In Wales, we are able to provide an ideal environment in which
you can prepare for the challenges of a career as a professional
harpist. You will work closely with some of the world’s best known
harpists, including our regular visiting consultant, Catrin
Finch.
In one-to-one lessons, you will concentrate on developing a
secure technique and exploring a wide range of solo repertoire. You
may also apply for additional tuition on the triple harp.
You will develop professional skills and musical confidence
through ensemble playing and regular participation in orchestral
repertoire classes, departmental performance classes, lunchtime
concerts, masterclasses and workshops.
Your development as a harpist will be supported by specialist
classes exploring the history of the harp and early harp studies.
You will also receive tuition in teaching skills and arranging for
the harp, enabling you to develop the versatility expected of
harpists entering the profession today.
We place great emphasis on giving students regular performance
opportunities, both as soloists and chamber musicians. You will
take part in a busy programme of in-house concerts and recitals and
you may gain orchestral experience with the RWCMD Symphony
Orchestra. Our annual Spring Harp Festival is a popular and
important event in the harp calendar, bringing together over 90
harpists of all ages.
