Department of Creative Music Technology Studies
The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama was the first UK
Conservatoire to offer Creative Music Technology as a Principal
Study within its degree courses.
Studying in a lively Conservatoire environment which provides
extensive one-to-one tuition, the focus of the course is firmly on
the development of your individual musical personality. We will
provide you with the knowledge, practical skills, resources and
opportunities to develop as a creative musician through personal
discovery and experimentation.
The course encompasses a wide range of activities that apply the
latest technology to various musical contexts including
composition, performance and recording. We constantly review and
update our programmes in order to remain at the forefront of
evolutions in both technology and industry. Many of our past
students are now in prominent positions within the global music
profession and their influence is shaping its future.
You will develop skills in sound design and creating music for
film and for interactive performance. You will work in contexts
such as acousmatic music, live electronics with acoustic
instruments, internet-based sonic and video arts, and
collaborations on events both inside and outside the College.
In addition, you will learn techniques for recording
performances ranging from solo recitals to full orchestral
concerts, in stereo and surround sound using our fully professional
recording studio, and also on location.
Students entering the course need to have extensive musical
experience and be proficient instrumental players. We will
encourage you to continue with instrumental tuition as part of your
course. During the application process, we will also expect you to
be able to demonstrate an awareness of the particular demands of
working with music technology by submitting examples of your
individual creative work.
