Enhancing our Environment

Environmentally Friendly

Environmental awareness, sustainability and energy efficiency are central to the new development. Our aim is to achieve a building rated ‘excellent’ using the BREEAM Environmental Assessment Method.

"We’re planning a landmark development in a significant and much-loved cultural location. We’re very sensitive to the responsibilities that brings. We’re aiming to open up vistas onto Bute Park and complement historic Cathays Park opposite."
Hilary Boulding, Principal

  • The new build will use low emission boilers and solar panels
  • It will seek to attain the very highest environmental standards, using ground-source heating and cooling and solar water heating
  • The new Exhibition Arcade will function as a stack chimney, an efficient and environmentally friendly method of ventilating and heating large spaces
  • The design will enhance the College’s location, complementing our existing Grade II listed Anthony Hopkins Centre (formerly the Mews of Cardiff Castle)
  • Portland Stone will be used to mirror the neo-classical buildings in neighbouring Cathays Park
  • The timber-clad Concert Hall will blend into the adjacent woodland
  • The Design Commission for Wales’ Design Review Panel commended the excellent presentation of the College’s Planning proposals and looked forward to a ‘high quality development’.

Enhancing our Surroundings

The College borders one of the key gateways to Bute Park. The development will:

  • Significantly improve the environment for local residents and visitors to the city, providing a place to relax, to attend and participate in performances
  • Improve this key access point with better lighting and security
  • Open up a new public vista onto the Grade I listed Bute Park
  • Provide enhanced public facilities in the new foyer
  • Be fully accessible and inclusive
