Robert Plane

Robert Plane has enjoyed a career encompassing
solo and chamber work, as well as holding the principal clarinet
positions of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Northern
Sinfonia and, currently, the BBC National Orchestra of
Wales. As guest principal clarinet he has played with some of
the world's greatest orchestras, including the Chamber Orchestra of
Europe, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam and the London
Symphony Orchestra. He has played concertos with the Bournemouth Symphony, Ulster Orchestra,
City of London Sinfonia, RTE National Symphony Orchestra, Zurich
Chamber Orchestra and the Dortmunder Philharmoniker, and he
made his BBC Proms concerto debut in 2011.
Robert is
a successful recording artist who is particularly highly regarded
for his Naxos recordings of Finzi, Stanford, Ireland and Howells.
His account of Finzi's Clarinet Concerto won Classic CD Magazine's
'Best Concerto Recording' Award and was selected as BBC Radio 3's
recommended version in 'Building a Library'. Gramophone Magazine
has hailed recordings of 'ravishing lyricism and conviction by
Robert Plane, who has now surely fully occupied the shoes of the
late Thea King in his championship of British clarinet music.' His
recording of Messiaen's 'Quartet for the End of Time' with the
Gould Trio was praised by BBC Music Magazine as the 'best modern
account' of this monumental work.
robert's masterclasses are in great
demand, with recent visits to the Royal Academy of Music and Royal
College of Music in London, Beijing Central Conservatory and the
San Francisco Conservatory.
