Murray Johnston

Murray Johnston has worked as Principal
oboist to the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet from 1971 – 74 and the
Welsh National Opera from 1974 – 2008. He has also worked
as principal oboe with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC
National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Northern Ireland, Royal Ulster
Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Covent Garden Orchestra, Welsh Chamber
Orchestra, Welsh Philharmonia.
Educated at Perth Academy, Gordonstoun School
and University of Barcelona, Murray studied music at the Royal
Manchester College of Music with Tom Ratter and subsequently
studied with Heinz Holliger.
Murray has performed most of the principal oboe concerti and given
many solo recitals within the area.
He has been teaching at the Royal Welsh
College of Music and Drama for most of the past thirty years and is
also guest tutor at the Birmingham Conservatoire.
He is experienced in class and ensemble
teaching, masterclasses, and adjudication at all levels.
