Barbara Brown

Barbara Brown was brought up in Aberdeen and
studied music at Kings College London, followed by a postgraduate
year at the National Centre for Orchestral studies. During this
time she studied with Gareth Morris, Sebastian Bell, and then
piccolo with Pat Morris. After graduating she taught flute at
Reading University and freelanced with most of the
major London orchestras, as well as the National Orchestra of
Wales, Opera North, and the BBC Philharmonic, before joining the
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1991 as principal piccolo, where
she spent nine very happy years.
During this time, Barbara continued to play as
much chamber music as possible and was part of a BSO wind quintet
which performed and broadcast regularly. She was also very active
in the music education department and helped to develop and present
projects all over the region.
Since leaving the BSO in 2000 Barbara has
continued to live in Poole and is a busy freelance flautist,
working mainly with Welsh National Opera and the BSO. She is a
dedicated teacher both privately and at Southampton University
where she has taught for eight years. Her hobbies include cycling,
learning French and making cakes!
