Kathryn Whitney

A versatile musician whose work combines
concert, recital and opera performance with a wide range of
collaborative, research and educational projects, award-winning
Canadian/British singer Kathryn Whitney’s performances have been
described as ‘meaty,’ ‘atmospheric,’ ‘prophetic,’ (Oxford Times)
and ‘delightful’ (High Notes).
Trained at the universities of Toronto (BA Music History &
German), Oxford (MPhil, DPhil 20th-century music
aesthetics) and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (PG
Dip Performance, Early Music), her singing teachers include
Cornelius Reid (New York), Emma Kirkby and Susan McCulloch. Kathryn
completed her singing training under the patronage of Wolfson
College, Oxford, where she was Creative Arts Fellow from 2002-2005.
She sang her London debut recital at St John’s Smith Square in
spring 2005.
Kathryn has held academic lectureships at Oxford for 12 years, with
concurrent appointments at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of
Music. She has given masterclasses and lecture-recitals in the UK
and Canada, including the University of British Columbia, and the
University of Oxford. Kathryn has premièred over 30 new works, with
recent commissions including works by David L. McIntyre, and John
McCabe, CBE (“Heloise to Abelard”, Novello & Co,
2005).
Since 2010 Kathryn is also Visiting Research Fellow at the
Institute of Musical Research in the School of Advanced Study at
the University of London.
As Walton Fellow at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama,
Kathryn will complete a number of song-related projects, including
concerts of Walton’s music in Cardiff and Italy, a web resource on
Walton’s solo songs, and masterclasses.
