John Stein

John Stein studied at the Royal Academy of Music on four scholarships and went on to win most of the major solo violin and chamber music prizes. He has held positions with the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and was appointed Leader of the Royal Ballet Orchestra at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In the concert hall he has appeared both as a leader and as soloist.  Having been invited to Wales, he was instrumental in the establishment of a permanent orchestra for Welsh National Opera and was Orchestra Leader from its formation until 2008. During that time he performed most of the operatic repertoire.

As Leader and Director he has played in many of Europe and America’s major cities. Conductors he has worked with include Bolt, Boulez, Goodall, Guilini, Jurowski, Kempe, Levine, Mackerras, Rizzi and Solti.  One of his specific responsibilities was the development of recordings for WNO with Decca, EMI, Telarc and Teldec, which involved working with some of the greatest opera singers, including Sutherland, Pavarotti, Fleming and Terfel.

John teaches at the RWCMD and is an adjudicator for a number of major youth festivals and for ABRSM. He is a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.
