Fisher, Ian

Ian Fisher

Ian Fisher took up the horn mainly because he liked the sound but with the additional incentive that the lessons coincided with a double period of Latin on a Wednesday afternoon. After studying with Sydney Coulston at the Royal Northern College of Music (where he won the Hiles medal) Ian joined the orchestra of London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet) then moved to the Scottish National Orchestra (now the Royal Scottish National Orchestra) and became a member of the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra in 1986 (now the BBC National Orchestra of Wales). Apart from trying to work out why every ensemble he joins changes its name soon afterwards, Ian's other hobbies include falling off classic British motorbikes, making up excuses for not decorating the house and writing articles for classical music journals. He also enjoys woodturning, claiming that sticking sharp chisels into rapidly spinning pieces of wood is excellent therapy after a day with a tyrannical conductor. Ian is married with three children, one born in London, one born in Glasgow and one born in Cardiff. He has no plans to move to Belfast.
