International Students
Student Speak

I chose the RWCMD not only for the exciting
music course but also for the opportunity to experience a foreign
country with a distinctive character. Before coming to the college
I did have some concerns about studying and living in the UK but
the kindness and enthusiasm of everyone here, coupled with a fresh
and friendly atmosphere have helped me adapt quickly.
The RWCMD provides you with the best study
settings and tutors are always happy to help you overcome any
difficulties during your studies. There are also regular English
lessons each week to improve your English language skills.
In comparison with studying in China, the
college holds more concerts showcasing different music styles every
week. It also has lots of visiting international artists that teach
us and answer our questions about the music industry.
There is always something going on at the
college and in Cardiff so no matter what types of music or drama
you like you will always find something to entertain you. There are
also lots of clubs such as yoga; football and photography that you
can join or for something more low key you can go to the beautiful
park behind the college or go to the shops which are just 5 minutes
walk away!
I enjoy living here very much and look forward
to seeing what exciting things tomorrow holds.

"I came to the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama after
studying at conservatoires in Boston and Amsterdam. My tutor here
is world-class and someone I feel I will always be able to turn to
for support and advice. I’ve also been exposed to many academics,
musicologists and performers of the highest level. The relatively
small size of the college is a real advantage in terms of the
number of opportunities available to each student and, in
comparison with other major cities, Cardiff offers a fairly
hassle-free lifestyle which has enabled me to really focus on my
music."

"I hadn't considered going abroad to study until I joined a
brass band summer school in the UK where I met my current teacher
David Childs. His performance was absolutely amazing and I decided
to go to the college because of him.
Cardiff is a compact city but everything is here; big shopping
centres, beautiful parks, historic castles, nightclubs and the the
major development of Cardiff Bay. Welsh people are much friendlier
and more relaxed compared to Japanese people and Cardiff is a
very safe city.
My college's unique points are that it's a very small and
friendly place. All students, teachers and staff know each other
and say hello. This is a big advantage for international students
which makes you feel like part of a family even though you're away
from home.
Most lectures only have 5-10 students and you always
get attention from the lecturer. I sometimes struggle to understand
English, but they are always helpful. I have also had great
experience of an arts management internship organised through
college.
