Dr Simon Jones was appointed as Head of String Performance in 2012. Under his leadership, the String Department aims to deliver the highest standards of specialist tuition and a unique range of opportunities for string players in an actively supportive conservatoire environment. The Department benefits from strong links with leading international musicians including cellist Paul Watkins and violinist Daniel Phillips, who both hold positions as International Chairs at the College.

In addition to instrumental tuition in one-to-one and small group lessons, every student has dedicated time with an accompanist, and regular chamber music coaching. An inspirational programme of masterclasses with world-class visiting artists encourages students to reach for new heights and to achieve their maximum potential both artistically and professionally.

Chamber Music is at the heart of the College’s offer and every student will play in up to five different groups within their first term, giving them them opportunities to get to know colleagues and identify those they might be best suited to working with in the longer term. Groups are nurtured through regular coaching throughout their studies. Chamber Musicians also benefit from additional coaching and mentoring from members of The Gould Trio, which is the College’s Chamber Ensemble in Residence.

Another fundamental part of the training is in the area of stylistic performance; an awareness of different periods and styles is explored through a variety of classes and performance projects. Students are also able to apply for tuition on associated period instruments with some of the leading experts in the field, including violinist Rachel Podger. Opportunities to perform baroque music range from trios and quartets featuring harpsichord and fortepiano to Badinerie, the College’s leading early music ensemble.

Larger ensembles including String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, music theatre and opera orchestras, new music ensembles and various student-led initiatives enable students to experience a broad range of repertoire.

The College is also in the unique position of having developed a strings placement scheme with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera. These privileged arrangements enable selected students to work with international conductors in two of the UK’s leading professional orchestras.
